Golf in Salzburg

Two courses, one motto: „Championship Course meets Friendship Course". Both lie pleasantly flat on the valley floor, among reeds and ponds, with the year-round snow-capped glacier of the Kitzsteinhorn towering over everything. The friendlier course is named after it, one where even a wayward drive can still turn into a good hole. The „Schmittenhöhe" next door is the ambitious one – it demands the precise shot over water and a steady hand on fast greens, and in return turns every successful putt into a moment you’ll still be talking about after the round. By the way: if you play the „Schmittenhöhe" six under par, you’ll have matched Bernhard Langer’s course record from 1992. And if not, you probably still had one of the finest rounds of the year.

A little stream winds its way through almost every hole here – sometimes quietly along the edge, sometimes straight across the fairway, where it turns the shot to the green into a small test of nerve. The flat, easily walkable course leads past rustic old hay barns towards its jewel: a par 3 with an island green, right in front of the sunny clubhouse terrace. From there you especially enjoy watching the following flights do their best to finish the spectacular 18th hole. And that golfers voted this course Golf Course of the Year in 2025 surprises no one after a round here.

As soon as the first rays of sun fall on the high plateau, you see why this course is often called the „jewel of Salzburg’s golf country": dew glistens on the fairways, the mist still lies in the Salzach valley while the Pongau mountains reveal themselves. The holes wind in varied fashion over alpine meadows and gentle rises that like to tempt a bold shot over the crest. If you like, you glide from hole to hole in an electric cart – leaving more energy for your game and more time to let your gaze wander over the fairways and on to the peaks.

One of Austria’s oldest golf courses – and one with two faces: the front nine are generously laid out, and the second hole, a par 4, already tempts you to attack from the tee. The back nine, the old holes, run tighter through dense riverside woodland, but are no less appealing: here, among old trees and mountain streams, the clever shot is rewarded. And after the round you finally enjoy the view of the Hohe Tauern in peace – over a well-earned drink or a wonderful soak in the warm thermal water of the Felsentherme.

Set in one of the sunniest regions of Austria, this championship course in the Mur valley looks flat and inviting, but has more to offer than its calm setting suggests. All around, the peaks of the Niedere Tauern watch over the wide high valley, while on holes 10 and 12 the Mur comes into play. And on the short 12th, anyone who dares the drive over the water is even offered a chance at eagle. If it doesn’t come off in the end, the stunning views and the clear mountain air more than make up for it.
