Royal golf meets great design
There’s that moment in the early morning when the mist still hangs over the fairways, the air smells of pine and the spa gardens, and the first tee shot of the day awaits you. That’s exactly why people come to the west of the Czech Republic – the heart of the Bohemian Golf Region, where, over a hundred years ago, spa guests from half of Europe would travel to relax. Today, one course follows another here: the sophisticated spa triangle around Karlovy Vary and Mariánské Lázně, the tranquil forests around Plzeň, and the castle-dotted landscape just outside Prague. Ten partner courses await in this corner of the country alone – royal tradition and superb design, often just a short drive apart. And at the end, like a promise on the horizon: the Golden City itself.
Anyone travelling with Fairway 2 Hotel saves 50 per cent – because when there are two of you, you pay just one green fee at all partner courses. Each voucher is valid per round – so if you like, you can play the same course twice. Take a look at the map to get an idea of where you’d like to go.
The Major Courses
Karlštejn is one of those courses you still remember years later. The holes wind through wooded hills and gentle valleys, each with its own character, now wide and inviting, now demanding a precise shot. Above it all towers the mighty 14th-century Gothic castle – a sight that has you reaching for your phone at the second hole. The course plays fairly for every handicap, yet rewards the bold shot. Little wonder that Bernhard Langer once won a Czech Open here. Anyone who has played here understands why Karlštejn ranks among the great names – and personalities such as Sean Connery and Morgan Freeman have teed off here too.

A quiet valley, the river Teplá murmuring in the background, and before you a hole that poses a question: water or safety? Daring or caution? Gary Player set Cihelny into the landscape so that every shot becomes a decision – Scottish style, in the heart of Bohemia, just a stone's throw from Karlovy Vary. The greens run fast and true. And when the final putt drops, you linger a while longer, simply not wanting the afternoon to end.

Here you don't simply play a round – you walk through 120 years of golfing history. In 1905 King Edward VII opened the Royal in person; Queen Elizabeth II later granted it its royal title. At 780 metres on the edge of the Imperial Forest, the air smells of pine and stays pleasantly cool even at the height of summer. The holes follow the Scottish-Irish tradition, wide and generous, with the charm of an era when a round of golf was something you took your time over. And for all its noble history, here you are welcomed not like a guest, but like someone who belongs.

Františkovy Lázně is the gentle overture from which the rest of Bohemia opens up almost by itself. The 18 holes stretch through a nature reserve along the river Ohře, past old trees and glittering waterways – a course that plays invitingly without ever growing dull. The welcome is warm, German is spoken, and on the terrace the round winds down as though among old friends. Easy, relaxed, with the good feeling of having arrived.

Set within a nature park in the river valley of the Berounka, this 27-hole course was drawn into the gently rolling woodland by architects Chris Johnson and Kamil Pilát. Three nines, each with its own character, with sweeping views over forest and valley. At its heart stands the converted 17th-century manor, today home to a hotel, restaurant and a spa in antique style. A place you'd happily never leave – and here, you easily can stay.
Location: Darová / Břasy (near Pilsen) Distance: approx. 25 km from Pilsen Holes / Par: 27 holes, par 72

A centuries-old avenue of lime trees on the front nine, plenty of water on the back nine – Alfrédov plays with nature rather than against it. The course settles elegantly into the landscape and is considered one of the country's finest, without ever becoming too long or intimidating. The grand finale is the 18th: a shot of around 110 metres over water onto an island green, right in front of the restaurant terrace. Pull it off and you may well earn applause from the guests rounding off their day there.

Details →Short & green
Not every round has to mean 18 holes and four hours. These two sit deep in the woods, are quickly played and beautifully located – perfect for the day when time is short but the urge to play is great.
9 holes in the green
In the quiet hinterland between Karlovy Vary and Žatec, Bohemia's famous hop country, lies this peaceful nine-hole course. Little fuss, plenty of nature – a relaxed round, just the thing for a free afternoon.

2-for-1At the gates of Prague
In the heart of the Křivoklát forests, just about 30 kilometres from Prague and quickly reached via the motorway. A pleasant course with a hotel, spa and two restaurants right next door – ideal as a stop on the way into the capital or out of it.
Location: Unhošť (near Prague) Holes / Par: 12 holes, par 71
Your benefit applies: Sun–Fri
2-for-1A little further north, towards the German border and Dresden, two more partner courses await:
At Golfresort Terasy above Ústí nad Labem the first holes run along the shore of a lake, the second climb the slope over terraced tees – with a view of water and mountain ridges that makes you reluctant to move on after the round. And the Kotlina Terezín course lies in the shadow of the historic fortress town of Terezín, a quiet nine-hole round for in between (Mon–Fri from 12 noon). Terasy can be played anytime. Both, of course, 2-for-1.
So many courses, so many possibilities. Where will it draw you? If you're still undecided, the best idea is to follow a route that links the region's finest into a single journey – from quiet nature all the way to the Golden City.
Travel idea
Picture a journey that leads from the quiet nature of West Bohemia all the way to the Golden City: three golf days along the Pilsen–Prague axis, each course a step closer to the capital – and at the end, Prague itself. In the middle, one night in a 4-star resort, for which, thanks to the 2-for-1 voucher, only one of you pays. The tip: come midweek – the fairways are quieter, and the hotel voucher can be redeemed Monday to Thursday.
Alfrédov: anytime · Darovanský Dvůr: Mon–Thu, 8–11 a.m., April–Nov · Karlštejn: anytime · Hotel Darovanský Dvůr: 1 night incl. breakfast, Mon–Thu, April–Nov.
